Exploring Victoria Falls: A Guide to Zambia’s Hidden Gems

Having been awestruck by the panoramic immensity of Victoria Falls from the Zimbabwean side, our next imperative was clear: what is a trip to this natural wonder if not to walk over to Zambia to experience where all the action truly begins? Crossing into a new country, even if just a short walk over a bridge, always adds another layer of adventure to travel.

Zambia, officially the Republic of Zambia, is a fascinating landlocked country located at the crossroads of Central, Southern, and East Africa. Its rich history predates European influence, with the region originally inhabited by various Khoisan peoples before being profoundly impacted by significant migrations of Bantu-speaking peoples starting around the 13th century. In the 18th century, the forces of European colonialization took hold, with the British establishing protectorates known as Barotziland-North-Western Rhodesia and North-Eastern Rhodesia. These two entities were later merged in 1911 to form Northern Rhodesia. For the majority of the colonial period, Zambia was governed by an administration appointed from London, often acting on the advice of the powerful British South Africa Company. Finally, after decades of struggle and a growing independence movement, Zambia achieved its hard-won independence in October 1964.

Geographically, Zambia sits directly north of Zimbabwe and is, crucially for our visit, the source of the majestic falls. The Zambezi River originates in Zambia, flowing south through Angola, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, before embarking on its final dramatic journey through Mozambique to eventually empty into the Indian Ocean. This geographic fact offers a unique perspective on Victoria Falls from the Zambian side – you’re looking down the river, into the very mouth of the falls.

Our cross-border stroll took us over the iconic Victoria Falls Bridge. Constructed in 1905, this engineering marvel spans the Zambezi River just below the iconic falls, crossing over the dramatic Second Gorge. As the river meticulously delineates the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, the bridge serves as a vital connection between the two nations, linking the bustling town of Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, with Livingstone, Zambia. Beyond its practical purpose, the bridge is a historical landmark and a site for thrilling activities like bungee jumping, offering a breathtaking vantage point over the gorge and the Zambezi.

The Zambian side of the falls truly does offer a distinct and intimate perspective. Unlike the sweeping panoramic views from Zimbabwe, this side allows for a closer, more personal interaction with the immense power of the water. Our exploration here took us down into the depths, embarking on a hike into the Boiling Pot. This unique location, situated at the base of the falls in the gorge, is where all the colossal volume of water collected from the various gorges is violently churned and swept away downriver. Standing here, feeling the immense power of the water as it crashes around you, is an utterly humbling experience.

The longer hike back up from the Boiling Pot was quite the workout, but it was made all the more interesting by the presence of mischievous baboons, which we’ve seen so many of on this trip! They’re constant companions in these more populated areas around the falls, always on the lookout for an opportunistic snack. The views from the top on the Zambian side are overly dramatic, not only accompanied by the drenching sprays of water but often by vibrant rainbows that arc through the mist, creating a truly surreal and colorful spectacle.

Exploring both sides of Victoria Falls offered a complete and unforgettable experience, showcasing its diverse beauty and immense power from every angle. Having thoroughly soaked in the thundering smoke and boiling water, it was time to turn our truck west once more, beginning our journey back into Namibia.
