A panoramic view from the gondola ride to Monte in Funchal, showcasing lush greenery and the vibrant landscape of Madeira.

Monte: Ascending to Madeira’s Historical Heights

| | |

Our journey into the historical heights of Funchal culminated in an unforgettable experience: a panoramic gondola ride to Monte. This wasn’t just a means of transport; it was a breathtaking ascent, traversing 3,200 meters and climbing 570 meters, offering exceptional views of the city sprawling against the vast Atlantic backdrop. On a clear day, the vista was simply spectacular, painting a memorable picture of Funchal’s unique coastal embrace.

The Thrill of the Carros de Cesto: A Historical Joyride

Once we reached Monte, a truly unique cultural experience awaited us: the traditional Carros de Cesto ride. Imagine hopping into a two-seater wicker toboggan, then hurtling down the hillsides, guided by skilled ‘Carreiros’ (wicker basket drivers) who expertly use their rubber-soled boots as brakes. This exhilarating 2km descent is far more than just a ride; it’s a method of transport dating back to the 1850s, originally used by Monte’s residents for swift travel down to Funchal. It offers an exciting, albeit slightly wild, glimpse into Monte’s past and a truly iconic Madeiran adventure. It’s a fantastic blend of history, tradition, and pure fun!

Monte Palace Tropical Garden: A Tranquil Oasis

After our exhilarating downhill ride, a challenging ascent (or rather, a brisk walk!) awaited us to return to the summit of Monte. The effort was amply rewarded by our next destination: the serene and expansive Monte Palace Tropical Garden. This botanical and cultural attraction spans approximately 70,000 square meters, offering an incredible escape into natural beauty and artistic expression.

The garden’s diverse collections are simply captivating. We wandered through lush pathways showcasing exotic plants from around the world, marveling at the vibrant flora. Interspersed throughout the landscape are stunning displays of azulejo tiles, some dating back centuries, reflecting various periods of Portuguese art and history. The garden also houses an impressive collection of Zimbabwean sculptures, adding another layer of cultural depth to this tranquil space. We happily spent several hours here, snacking at the charming café, exploring its winding pathways, discovering hidden waterfalls, and enjoying some well-deserved, fancy cocktails amidst the calming natural beauty.

This day’s gondola ascent, thrilling toboggan descent, and immersive garden exploration combined to create a truly memorable last major event in Madeira’s unique historical heights. It was a perfect blend of exhilarating adventure, historical insight, and serene beauty, encapsulating the diverse experiences Madeira so wonderfully offers.
